December Event – Year in Review at The Rathskellar

What: Year in Review

When: Tuesday, December 15, 2015, 5:30PM – 7:00PM

Where: The Rathskeller

RSVP: Eventbrite (coming soon)

As another calendar year draws to a close we once again find ourselves heading to The Rathskeller to talk about 2015 and start the planning process for 2016.  AIA Indiana Executive Director Jason Shelley, 2015 AIA Indianpolis President Blake Wagner, and incoming 2016 AIA Indianapolis President Donna Sink should be among the group and this is a great time for those of you in YAF to meet the leadership for AIA Indianapolis.

If you’ve ever been interested in helping to shape the future of YAF in Indy consider this your opening.  We’re always looking for passionate young people to sit on the committee (it looks great on your resume) or take up the mantle and fill one of the co-chair positions (even better on your resume).

Even if you’re not interested in leadership we hope you come out and give your input on how YAF could better serve your needs next year.  We’ll even bribe you for your feedback with excellent soft pretzels and Indy’s best spicy mustard.

Thank you to everyone who made this year in YAF the most well attended in the history of the city.  We hope to break that record yet again in 2016.  Bring your friends to The Rathskeller and help us celebrate.

July Event – Eskenazi Hospital with AIA Indianapolis

What: Joint meeting with AIA Indianapolis at Eskenazi Hospital

When: Thursday, July 9th 5:00pm – 7:00pm

Where: Eskenazi Hospital

RSVP: Eventbrite

Each year our annual budget for YAF Indy is generously supplied by AIA Indianapolis.  Just like our group they too have monthly events that center around something relating to the architectural profession.  In July we’ll be partnering with AIA Indianapolis to see Eskanzi Health up close and personal.  Every AIA event is free to AIA members (both associate level and full AIA members) and for this joint event the free admission is also extended to YAF Indy members.  That’s right, this is a totally free evening spent meeting firm owners and your peers all while getting some insight into the newest hospital in Indianapolis.

The event is scheduled as follows.
• 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. – Networking, Hors D’oeuvres, Beer, Wine, Soft Drinks
• 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. – Presentation – “Design Considerations – Eskenazi Health Commonground” – Matthew R. Gutwein, President and CEO, Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County – Earn 1 AIA/CES Learning Unit!

This is an excellent chance to see what the larger AIA events offer as well as expand your circle of connections in the architecture community.  We hope to see you there.

June Event – Happy Hour at The Rathskellar

What: Happy Hour

When: Tuesday, June 16, 2015, 5:30PM – 7:00PM

Where: The Rathskeller

RSVP: Eventbrite

This year at YAF events we’ve been trying a new format where we provide a suggested topic of discussion each month (sometimes with local experts).  With summer approaching we thought it would be nice to simply kick back this time around and enjoy a purely social happy hour.  No ulterior motive, no local expert, no pressure.

Join us at The Rathskeller on June 16th after work.  If the weather is nice we’ll be sitting out back in the Biergarten (if it’s raining we’ll be at tables in the bar).  Bring your friends or your significant other so they can finally meet this random group of young architects who steal you away one odd evening a month.  As a bonus incentive YAF will be providing appetizers for the table and for that reason we need you to RSVP above (we might not have a topic, but we still plan ahead).

See you at the Biergarten.

January Event – Salary Negotiations, How Much Am I Worth?

What: Salary Negotiations, How Much Am I Worth?

When: Tuesday, Jan 20, 2015, 5:30PM – 7:00PM

Where: Black Acre Brewing Company (5632 E Washington St., Indianapolis, IN)

RSVPEventbrite

Sparked by feedback from our Year in Review and a survey we’ve been sending out periodically we have a wealth of topics to discuss this year at our more informal “social” events.  Up first will be a very pressing issue to many of you; Salary Negotiation, How Much Am I Worth?

Time and again we’ve heard the frustration of young architects and designers in Indianapolis over not having a concrete grasp on what the going rate is for their services.  Many design firms subscribe to various salary aggregation services, but we have yet to hear of a single firm who actually provides their salaries back to those companies.  As a Young Architect you can take matters into your own hands.  If you’re currently employed or have worked before in the Indianapolis area we’re encouraging you to fill out your salary information on Glassdoor (www.glassdoor.com).  It’s a completely anonymous way to help us all answer the question “How much am I worth?”

To join in the discussion come out on January 20th to Black Acre Brewing Company (in the historic Irvington Neighborhood on Indy’s East Side).  We’ll be sampling local brews and swapping stories about how to negotiate your salary.  Also take a minute and RSVP via the Eventbrite link above.  We use that to track our anticipated attendance and it has the added benefit of allowing last minute communication if events or locations have to change.

Hotel Tango Whiskey – Share Your Rendering Techniques – Oct 23

What: Hotel Tango Whiskey, Happy Hour + Rendering Techniques Discussion

When: Thursday, October 23, 2014, 5:30PM – 7:00PM

Where: 702 Virgina Ave Indianapolis, IN 46203

Please RSVP: Eventbrite

Fall is here, winter is coming, and there’s no better time to sample the spirits from the newest distillery in downtown Indianapolis. Besides being a good time to meet and network with other YAF people (and discuss how best to make an Old Fashioned) we’ll be talking about rendering techniques.  If you have a recent rendering your firm has done (or that you have worked on personally) make sure to bring a printed copy and a brief understanding of the process that was used to produce it.  As added incentive we’ll be buying a drink for the first 3 attendees to show up with a rendering.  Additionally we’ll include all renderings in the Event Recap we post on YAFIndy.org.

Even if you don’t care about renderings feel free to join us for drinks.  Bring your friends from your firm or from your days back in school.  This will be a good time to meet some of your architectural peers, grill the competition about design mistakes you’ve read about on IBJ, or ask for a recommendation on who is hiring around town.  We only have 3 events left before 2015 begins.

See you there.

This annual event is a chance to meet architects in our community who are a few steps ahead of us in their career progression. We discuss the steps and transitions they’ve gone through to get them where they’re at today. They have a wealth of tips and suggestions on how to best continue with our careers in the architectural profession. It’s often a fun and inspiring event. Along with great conversation, we also provide food and drinks. It is typically one of the most well attended events and can be a great introduction to Young Architects Forum as well as a quick way to network with professionals from various firms throughout the Indianapolis area.

A few more specifics on the location.
